How to Export Maya Files as OBJ

Sep 27, 2024

Are you a 3D artist looking to share your Maya creations with others? One of the most common file formats for 3D models is the OBJ file format. In this article, we will guide you through the simple process of exporting your Maya files as OBJ.

Step 1: Open your Maya file

First, open your Maya file that you want to export as an OBJ. Ensure that all your textures and materials are correctly applied to the 3D model before proceeding to export.

Step 2: Select the 3D model

Navigate to your 3D model in the Maya viewport and make sure it is selected. If you have multiple objects in your scene, ensure that you select all the components of the model you want to export as a single OBJ file.

Step 3: Navigate to File > Export Selection

Go to the top menu and click on 'File', then select 'Export Selection' from the dropdown menu. This will open the Export Selection window where you can specify the file format and location for your export.

Step 4: Choose OBJ file format

In the Export Selection window, navigate to the 'Files of type' dropdown menu and select 'Wavefront OBJ (*.obj)' as the file format. This will ensure that your 3D model is exported in the OBJ file format.

Step 5: Set export options

After selecting the OBJ file format, you can customize the export options to fit your requirements. You can adjust settings such as the export scale, triangulation, and whether to export materials and textures along with the OBJ file.

Step 6: Specify export location and file name

Choose the destination folder where you want to save the exported OBJ file. Then, enter a suitable file name for the OBJ file.

Step 7: Click 'Export'

Once you have set the export options and specified the location and file name, click the 'Export' button to start the export process. Maya will then proceed to export your 3D model as an OBJ file to the specified location.

Congratulations! You have successfully exported your Maya file as an OBJ. You can now easily share your 3D model with others and collaborate on various 3D projects. Whether you are working on game development, animation, or 3D printing, the OBJ file format is widely supported and can be easily imported into various 3D software.

Now that you have mastered the process of exporting Maya files as OBJ, you can streamline your workflow and easily collaborate with other artists and designers in the 3D industry. Happy modeling!
