How to Make a 3D View Master

Oct 01, 2024

Do you love the nostalgia of viewing 3D images through a View Master? Why not make your own 3D View Master at home and enjoy the magic of 3D photography! Here's a step-by-step guide to creating your own 3D View Master:

Materials you'll need:

- Two cardboard tubes (toilet paper rolls work great)

- Scissors

- Black construction paper

- Clear plastic sheets (you can repurpose plastic packaging)

- Tape

- Glue

- Ruler

- Pen

- 3D images or create your own using a camera or smartphone

Steps:

1. Start by cutting the cardboard tubes into two equal parts. You'll need 4 pieces in total.

2. Cut the clear plastic sheets into small squares, ideally the same size as the tubes.

3. Take your 3D images and cut them into small squares as well. Make sure the images are the same size as the plastic sheets.

4. Using the ruler and pen, make small marks on the black construction paper to outline the shape of the tubes. The circles should be the same size as the cardboard tubes.

5. Cut out the circles from the construction paper. These will be the discs that hold the 3D images in place.

6. Now, glue the 3D images onto the clear plastic squares. Make sure the images are aligned correctly for the 3D effect to work.

7. Place one set of cardboard tube pieces on each end of the black construction paper discs. Tape or glue them in place securely.

8. Slide the clear plastic sheets with the 3D images into the cardboard tubes. You should have two pieces of plastic with images for each eye.

9. Place the two sets of tubes together, making sure the images are visible through the eyeholes.

10. Secure the two sets of tubes together using tape or glue.

Congratulations, you've just made your very own 3D View Master! To use it, hold it up to your eyes and press the lever to change the images.

Now you can enjoy viewing 3D images at home with your handmade 3D View Master. You can also get creative and take your own 3D images to view through your new device. It's a fun and nostalgic craft project that's perfect for both kids and adults alike! Give it a try and immerse yourself in the world of 3D photography.
