How to Import OBJ in After Effects

Oct 01, 2024

Do you want to take your After Effects animations to the next level by adding 3D models? Importing OBJ files into After Effects is the key to unlocking a whole new realm of creativity. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

Step 1: Prepare Your 3D Model

Before you can import your OBJ file into After Effects, you need to have a 3D model ready. This could be something you've created in a 3D modeling software like Blender or 3ds Max, or it could be a pre-made model that you've downloaded. Make sure the file is in OBJ format, as After Effects supports this file type for 3D models.

Step 2: Import the OBJ File

Once you have your OBJ file ready, open After Effects and create a new composition. Then, go to the menu and select 'File' > 'Import' > 'File'. Find your OBJ file in the file browser and click 'Import'. After Effects will then import the OBJ file as a composition with a 3D layer.

Step 3: Adjust the 3D Model

After importing the OBJ file, you can now see it in the composition panel. You can adjust its position, rotation, and scale to fit into your scene. You can also apply materials and textures to the 3D model within After Effects to customize its appearance.

Step 4: Animate the 3D Model

With your 3D model in place, you can start animating it. You can keyframe its position, rotation, and scale to create movement. You can also use After Effects' built-in 3D camera to create dynamic camera movements around your 3D model.

Step 5: Render Your Composition

Once you've finished incorporating your 3D model into your After Effects composition, it's time to render your final animation. Go to the menu and select 'Composition' > 'Add to Render Queue'. Set your render settings and output module, then click 'Render'. After Effects will render your composition, including the imported 3D model, into a video file.

Now that you've learned how to import OBJ files into After Effects, you can elevate your animations to a whole new dimension. Experiment with different 3D models and incorporate them into your projects to add depth and visual interest. Have fun creating stunning 3D animations in After Effects!
