How to Import an OBJ to Maya 2018

Oct 01, 2024

In this tutorial, I'll walk you through the process of importing an OBJ file into Maya 2018. OBJ files are a popular format for 3D models and can be easily imported into Maya for further manipulation and rendering.

Step 1: Open Maya 2018

First, open Maya 2018 on your computer. If you don't have Maya 2018 installed, you can download and install it from the official Autodesk website.

Step 2: Set the Project

Before importing the OBJ file, make sure to set the project in Maya. This will help organize your files and keep everything in one place. Go to File > Set Project and choose a directory where you want to store your project files.

Step 3: Import the OBJ File

Once the project is set, go to File > Import and locate the OBJ file on your computer. Select the OBJ file and click 'Open' to import it into Maya.

Step 4: Adjust Import Settings

After importing the OBJ file, a window will pop up with import settings. Here, you can adjust the settings such as the scale, smoothing angle, and other options based on your preferences. Make sure to review the settings carefully to ensure the model is imported correctly.

Step 5: Confirm Import

Once you've configured the import settings, click 'Import' to bring the OBJ file into Maya. Depending on the complexity of the model and your system's performance, it may take some time to process the import.

Step 6: Review and Manipulate the Model

After the import is complete, you should see the OBJ file displayed in the Maya viewport. You can now review the model and proceed with any necessary manipulations, such as scaling, rotating, or applying materials.

Step 7: Save the Project

Once you're satisfied with the imported OBJ file and any modifications made, remember to save the project to preserve your work. Go to File > Save Scene As and choose a name for your Maya project file.

That's it! You've successfully imported an OBJ file into Maya 2018 and are ready to work on your 3D modeling and rendering projects. I hope this tutorial has been helpful, whether you're a beginner or an experienced Maya user. Stay tuned for more Maya tutorials and tips on our channel.
