How to Enable OBJ in Maya

Oct 02, 2024

If you're a 3D artist using Maya, you may encounter the need to work with OBJ files for your projects. However, by default, Maya doesn't support OBJ files. But don't worry, enabling OBJ support in Maya is a simple process. Here's how to do it:

1. Open Maya: Launch Maya on your computer.

2. Enable OBJ plugin: Go to the 'Windows' menu and select 'Settings/Preferences' > 'Plug-in Manager'. In the Plug-in Manager window, scroll down or use the search bar to find 'objNurbs.mll' and 'objExport.mll'. Make sure both of these plugins are loaded. If they are not loaded, check the boxes next to their names to enable them.

3. Restart Maya: After enabling the OBJ plugins, it's a good idea to restart Maya to ensure the changes take effect.

4. Import and export OBJ files: Once the OBJ plugins are enabled, you can now import and export OBJ files in Maya. To import an OBJ file, go to 'File' > 'Import' and select your OBJ file. To export an OBJ file, go to 'File' > 'Export Selection' and choose OBJ as the file type.

5. Work with OBJ files: With OBJ support enabled, you can now work with OBJ files in Maya just like any other supported file type. You can manipulate and edit the OBJ geometry, apply materials and textures, and incorporate it into your 3D scenes with ease.

By following these steps, you'll have OBJ support enabled in Maya, allowing you to seamlessly work with OBJ files in your 3D projects. Whether you're importing OBJ models created in other software or exporting your Maya scenes to OBJ format for use in other applications, having OBJ support in Maya expands your creative possibilities and workflow flexibility.
