How to Save Maya File as OBJ

Oct 03, 2024

If you're a 3D artist or designer working with Maya, you might need to save your projects in a format that can be easily shared with others. One common file format for 3D models is OBJ, which can be opened in various 3D software and is widely supported for 3D printing and game development. Fortunately, Maya provides a straightforward way to save your files in the OBJ format. Here's how to do it:

1. Open your Maya project and make sure the 3D model you want to save as OBJ is selected in the scene.

2. Go to 'File' in the menu bar and select 'Export Selection' from the dropdown menu. This will open the Export Selection window.

3. In the Export Selection window, choose 'OBJexport' from the 'Files of Type' dropdown menu. This will ensure that your file is saved in the OBJ format.

4. Next, specify the file name and location where you want to save the OBJ file. You can also adjust other export settings such as scale and triangulation options if needed.

5. Once you've set everything up, click 'Export' to save your Maya file as an OBJ.

Now your 3D model from Maya has been saved in the OBJ format, making it easier to share and collaborate with others who may be using different 3D software or platforms. Keep in mind that while OBJ is a versatile format, it may not fully preserve all the complex features and properties of your Maya project, so it's always a good idea to double-check your exported file in the software you plan to use it in.

In addition to exporting single objects as OBJ, Maya also allows you to export the entire scene as an OBJ file. Simply go to 'File' > 'Export All' and follow the same steps to save the entire scene as an OBJ file.

With these simple steps, you can easily save your Maya 3D models in the OBJ format, opening up new possibilities for sharing and collaborating on your 3D projects. Whether you're working on 3D printing, game design, or visual effects, having the ability to export your work to a widely compatible format like OBJ can streamline your workflow and enhance your creative possibilities.
