How to Convert SFM Model to OBJ

Oct 05, 2024

Hey there 3D modelers! Today, I'm going to show you how to convert your Source Filmmaker (SFM) model to OBJ format so you can use it in other 3D modeling software. Follow these simple steps to make it happen.

Step 1: Export your SFM model

First, open your Source Filmmaker and load the model you want to convert. Then, go to the File menu and select 'Export > Export DMX'. This will save your model in a DMX format, which is compatible with other 3D modeling software.

Step 2: Convert DMX to SMD

Next, you'll need to use a tool like the 'DMX to SMD' converter to change the DMX file into SMD format. This is necessary because most 3D modeling software can't directly import DMX files. You can easily find this tool online for free.

Step 3: Import SMD into Blender

Now, open Blender or any other 3D modeling software that supports OBJ format. Import the SMD file into your workspace. You may need to do some adjustments to the model's position, scale, or rotation to make it work seamlessly with your other projects.

Step 4: Export as OBJ

Once your model is ready, go to the File menu and select 'Export > Wavefront (.obj)'. This will save your model in OBJ format, which is widely supported in the 3D modeling community.

And that's it! You've successfully converted your SFM model to OBJ format. Now you can use it in your 3D modeling projects, game development, or any other creative work you're pursuing. Happy modeling!
