How to Export an OBJ from ZBrush

Oct 06, 2024

ZBrush is a powerful tool for digital sculpting and 3D modeling, and it’s often used to create detailed 3D assets for games, movies, and animations. If you want to use your ZBrush creations in other 3D software or for 3D printing, you’ll need to export them in a file format that’s compatible with those applications, such as OBJ. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through the process of exporting an OBJ file from ZBrush.

Step 1: Prepare your 3D model

Before exporting your model, make sure it’s ready for use in other applications. This may include finalizing the sculpt, adding color and texture, and organizing the subtools if your model has multiple parts.

Step 2: Exporting the OBJ

Once your model is ready, navigate to the Tool palette in ZBrush and select the Subtool that you want to export. Then, go to the Tool menu, click on Export, and choose OBJ. A window will pop up allowing you to specify the file name and location for the exported OBJ file. Make sure to select any export options that are relevant to your needs, such as including vertex color or welding points.

Step 3: Adjust export settings

In the OBJ Export Options window, you can adjust settings such as Group, Weld, and Smooth, depending on your preferences and the requirements of the software or 3D printing service you plan to use. For example, you may want to group similar parts together or adjust the level of smoothing.

Step 4: Save and export

Once you’re satisfied with the export settings, click OK to save the settings and export the OBJ file. ZBrush will then process the file and save it to the specified location. You can now use the exported OBJ file in other 3D software, such as Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max, or upload it to a 3D printing service to create a physical 3D model.

By following these steps, you can export your 3D models from ZBrush in the OBJ file format, making it easier to use them in other 3D applications or bring them to life through 3D printing. With this newfound ability to export your creations, you can expand your workflow and bring your ZBrush designs to new platforms and uses.
