How to Export OBJ from SolidWorks

Oct 08, 2024

If you're working with 3D modeling, you may find yourself needing to export OBJ files from SolidWorks to use in other 3D applications. Here's a quick guide on how to do it. First, open your SolidWorks assembly or part file. Then, go to File > Save As. In the dialog box, choose 'STL' as the file type. Once you've selected STL, click on 'Options' to bring up the export options. In the options window, you'll want to select 'Binary' as the STL output format. This will ensure that your file contains both geometry and color data. Once you've set up the options, click 'OK' and then 'Save' to export your file as an STL. After exporting the STL file, you'll need to use a third-party software, such as MeshLab or Blender, to convert the STL file to OBJ. Simply import the STL file into the third-party software and then export it as an OBJ file. Now you have successfully exported your SolidWorks file as an OBJ, and it's ready to be used in other 3D applications. Remember, exporting to OBJ may not carry over all the features and parameters from your original SolidWorks file, but it provides a good starting point for further editing and optimization in other software. Give it a try and see how it can enhance your 3D modeling workflow!
