How to Make a 3D View Master

Oct 09, 2024

Do you remember the fun of looking through a 3D view master and seeing images come to life in three dimensions? Now you can make your own 3D view master with just a few simple materials and a little bit of creativity. Here's how to do it:

Materials needed:

- Two identical photographs

- Cardboard

- Scissors

- Glue

- Transparent plastic sheet

- Rubber bands

Instructions:

1. Start by choosing two identical photographs that you want to turn into 3D images. These could be pictures of landscapes, animals, or even family portraits. The key is to have two photos that are exactly the same except for a slight shift in perspective.

2. Cut out two identical rectangles from the cardboard, each large enough to frame one of your photographs. These will serve as the frames for your 3D view master.

3. Use the glue to attach one of the photographs to each cardboard frame. Make sure the images are lined up perfectly.

4. Cut out a small rectangular window in the center of each cardboard frame. This is where you will look through to see the 3D effect.

5. Attach the two frames together with a hinge or simply tape them together so that they can open and close like a book.

6. Take the transparent plastic sheet and cut out two rectangles that are slightly larger than the windows on your cardboard frames. Use the rubber bands to attach one plastic sheet over each window, creating a clear barrier between your eyes and the photographs.

7. Now, when you open your 3D view master and look through the windows, you should see the two images merge into one, creating a 3D effect. Move the view master slightly from side to side to see the images come to life in three dimensions.

There you have it - your very own DIY 3D view master! You can experiment with different photographs and even create your own custom viewer designs. Enjoy the fun of experiencing photos in a whole new dimension with your homemade 3D view master.
