Porting OBJ to SFM: A Quick Guide

Oct 12, 2024

Hey everyone! Are you interested in bringing your OBJ models into Source Filmmaker (SFM)? Look no further, because I've got a quick and easy guide for you. Follow these steps to get started:

Step 1: Convert OBJ to SMD

First things first, you'll need to convert your OBJ model to Source Model (SMD) format. There are various software and tools available for this conversion, such as Blender, 3ds Max, or other 3D modeling software. Simply import your OBJ model and export it as an SMD file.

Step 2: Prepare the QC File

Next, you'll need to create a QC (Source Model File) file for your model. This file contains information about the model's structure, materials, and animations. You can use a text editor to create the QC file and specify the parameters for your model.

Step 3: Compile the Model

Once you have the SMD and QC files ready, it's time to compile the model using a compiler tool such as Crowbar. This tool will convert the SMD and QC files into a format that SFM can understand.

Step 4: Import the Model into SFM

Now that your model is compiled, you can easily import it into SFM. Simply open SFM, create a new session, and use the import feature to bring in your model. You can now use it in your animations and projects within SFM.

And that's it! You've successfully ported your OBJ model to SFM. Whether you want to create custom characters, props, or environments, this process will enable you to unleash your creativity within SFM.

If you're new to 3D modeling and animation, don't be intimidated by the technical aspects. With practice and exploration, you'll become more comfortable with the porting process. Keep experimenting and learning, and you'll soon be creating amazing content in SFM.
