How to Export OBJ to Unreal

Oct 13, 2024

If you're a game developer or 3D artist, you may be familiar with the process of creating 3D models in software such as Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max. Once you've created a 3D model, you'll likely want to import it into a game engine like Unreal Engine to use it in your game or virtual environment.

One of the most common file formats for 3D models is OBJ, and fortunately, it's relatively easy to export OBJ files from your 3D modeling software and import them into Unreal Engine.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to export OBJ to Unreal:

1. Create your 3D model in your preferred 3D modeling software. Once you're happy with the model, make sure it's properly UV unwrapped and has any necessary textures applied.

2. With your model ready, locate the export function in your modeling software. Look for the option to export as an OBJ file.

3. When exporting as an OBJ, you may have the option to include the materials and textures with the file. Make sure to select this option if available, as it will make the import process into Unreal Engine much smoother.

4. Save the OBJ file to a location on your computer where you can easily access it.

5. Open Unreal Engine and create a new project or open an existing one where you want to import your 3D model.

6. In the Content Browser, navigate to the folder where you want to import your model. Right-click in the empty space and select 'Import to /Game' from the context menu.

7. In the file dialog that appears, browse to the location where you saved the OBJ file and select it.

8. Unreal Engine will then import the OBJ file along with any associated materials and textures, creating a new Static Mesh asset in the Content Browser.

9. You can now drag and drop the imported Static Mesh into your level or use it in your game environment as needed.

By following these steps, you can easily export OBJ files from your 3D modeling software and import them into Unreal Engine for use in your game development projects. Whether you're creating characters, props, or environments, the OBJ format provides a versatile and widely-supported option for bringing your 3D models into Unreal Engine.
