How to Convert SFM Model to OBJ

Oct 14, 2024

If you work with 3D animation and simulation, you may encounter the need to convert Source Filmmaker (SFM) models to OBJ format for use in various 3D modeling software. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do this.

Step 1: Open Source Filmmaker (SFM) and load the model you want to convert to OBJ format.

Step 2: Once the model is loaded, go to the File menu and select Export > Export Session.

Step 3: In the Export Session window, choose OBJ as the file format and specify the location where you want to save the OBJ file.

Step 4: Click the Export button to save the SFM model as an OBJ file.

Step 5: Open your 3D modeling software (e.g. Blender, Maya, 3ds Max) and import the OBJ file. You should now be able to work with the SFM model in the chosen software.

It’s important to note that the conversion process may result in some loss of data, such as rigging and animation information. You may need to reapply rigging and animation to the model in the new software. Additionally, textures and materials may need to be reconfigured to match the original SFM model. However, the basic geometry of the model should be preserved in the OBJ file.

By following these steps, you can successfully convert SFM models to OBJ format for use in your 3D animation and modeling projects. Keep in mind that the specific steps and options may vary depending on the version of Source Filmmaker and the 3D modeling software you are using. Be sure to consult the documentation for both applications for detailed instructions. With a bit of patience and practice, you'll be able to seamlessly integrate SFM models into your 3D projects.
