How to Enable OBJ in Maya

Oct 17, 2024

If you're a 3D artist or designer using Maya for your projects, you may find yourself needing to work with OBJ files. OBJ is a popular file format for 3D models, and enabling OBJ in Maya can greatly streamline your workflow. Here's how to do it in a few simple steps.

Step 1: Open Maya

First, open Maya on your computer. Once it's up and running, you can proceed to enable OBJ support.

Step 2: Go to 'Windows' > 'Settings/Preferences' > 'Plug-in Manager'

In the Maya interface, navigate to the top menu and click on 'Windows'. From the dropdown menu, select 'Settings/Preferences' and then click on 'Plug-in Manager'.

Step 3: Enable OBJ plugin

In the Plug-in Manager window, look for the 'objExport.mll' plugin. It should be listed among the available plugins. Check the box next to 'objExport.mll' to enable the OBJ export plugin in Maya. This will allow you to import and export OBJ files within Maya.

Step 4: Restart Maya

After enabling the OBJ plugin, it's a good idea to restart Maya to ensure that the changes take effect. Close Maya and then open it again to start using OBJ support in your workflows.

Step 5: Import or Export OBJ files

Once Maya is up and running again, you can start importing or exporting OBJ files. To import an OBJ file, go to 'File' > 'Import' and select the OBJ file you want to bring into your Maya project. To export a 3D model as an OBJ file, select the objects you want to export and then go to 'File' > 'Export Selection'. In the file type dropdown, choose 'Wavefront OBJ' and save your file.

By enabling OBJ in Maya, you can seamlessly work with OBJ files and integrate them into your 3D modeling projects. Whether you're collaborating with other artists or working on personal projects, having OBJ support in Maya is a valuable asset for your workflow.
