How to Export Maya Files as OBJ

Oct 19, 2024

Are you a 3D designer using Maya for your projects? If so, you may need to export your models to share them with others or use them in different software. One common file format for this purpose is the OBJ format, which is widely supported by various 3D software and can preserve the textures and geometry of your models. Here's how you can export your Maya files as OBJ:

Step 1: Open your Maya project and make sure your model is ready for export. Check if all the textures are applied and the model is positioned correctly.

Step 2: Select the model or models you want to export. You can do this by clicking on the model in the viewport or selecting it from the Outliner.

Step 3: With the model selected, go to File > Export Selection. This will open the Export Selection window.

Step 4: In the Export Selection window, choose the file type as OBJ from the dropdown menu. You can also set the export options such as whether to export the selection as a single file or separate files for each object. Make sure to enable the 'Export Selection' option if it's not already selected.

Step 5: Click on the export button and choose the location where you want to save the OBJ file. Maya will export the selected model as an OBJ file along with the associated MTL file for textures.

Step 6: Once the export is complete, you can open the exported OBJ file in any 3D software that supports the OBJ format. You should see your model with its textures and geometry preserved.

By following these steps, you can easily export your Maya 3D models as OBJ files and share them with others or use them in different 3D software for further editing or rendering. This can be particularly useful when collaborating with other designers or working on projects that involve multiple software tools. So, next time you need to share your Maya models, remember to export them as OBJ for maximum compatibility and ease of use.
