How to Export as OBJ in Maya

Oct 19, 2024

Hey everyone, today I'm going to show you how to export your 3D models as OBJ files in Maya. OBJ is a popular file format for 3D models, and it's widely supported in various 3D software and game engines. So, let's get started!

Step 1: Select your 3D model

First, open your Maya project and select the 3D model you want to export as an OBJ file. Make sure the model is correctly positioned and oriented in the scene.

Step 2: Go to File > Export Selection

Once your model is ready, go to the File menu and select 'Export Selection'. This will open the Export Selection dialog box, where you can specify the file format and save location.

Step 3: Choose OBJ as the file format

In the Export Selection dialog box, choose 'OBJexport' from the 'Files of type' dropdown menu. This will ensure that your 3D model is exported as an OBJ file.

Step 4: Set export options

After selecting OBJexport, you can click on the 'Options' button to specify export settings such as triangulation, smoothing groups, and normals. Adjust these settings according to your preferences and the requirements of your target software or game engine.

Step 5: Specify the save location and file name

Once you've set the export options, choose the destination folder where you want to save the OBJ file. Give your file a meaningful name that describes the 3D model.

Step 6: Click 'Export'

Finally, click the 'Export' button to export your 3D model as an OBJ file. Maya will process the export and save the OBJ file to the specified location.

That's it! You've successfully exported your 3D model as an OBJ file in Maya. Now you can use this OBJ file in other 3D software or game engines for further processing or integration into your projects.
